  • Blackheads, or open comedos, are clogged pores that are filled with dead skin cells and oil, often referred to as sebum.

In a new Instagram compilation video, Dr. Pimple Popper — aka, dermatologist and TLC host Dr. Sandra Lee, MD — removes three gunk-filled blackheads from three different patients. One particularly fascinating blackhead looks like a tiny black stud earring, perfectly pierced in the center of a patient’s earlobe.

“Bet you didn’t even know it was here,” Dr. Lee says to the “pierced” patient. “Nope,” the patient cheerily replies right as the crusty blackhead is popped out.

Dr. Lee uses a comedone extractor to remove two of the blackheads in the video, including the earlobe gunk. The useful surgical tool pops out trapped blackheads with a firm press, causing minimal damage to tissue. For the final pop featured in the video, Dr. Lee uses her fingers to extract a brown-hued blackhead.

Blackheads, or open comedos, are actually clogged pores that are filled with dead skin cells and oil, not dirt or grime as myth may suggest. The blackish portion of a blackhead is due to the oxidation of the dead skin cells and oil when exposed to air.

“Disgusting,” one patient remarks when Dr. Lee shows him what she’s removed from his back. “Not everybody thinks it’s disgusting, let me tell you.” Here’s looking at you, kid.
